After hearing the North Wind's tales, the boy December isn't as enthusiastic about his month until a trip to some of the other months make him appreciate his own.

Text: English, German (translation)
Grade 2-4 December, portrayed as a small boy who lives alone, is allowed by the North Wind to visit three other boys: March, June, and October. He learns about the beauty of the year and the contentment that comes with good friends. Accompanying the well-told story are some of the most unusual, strange, and beautiful illustrations of recent years. Using a full range of colors, Kallay presents a fantasy world through vivid, stylized, but often very realistic pictures; animals appear on every page and, in a dreamlike setting, assorted objects (cups, pots, musical instruments, etc.) fall, float, or fly through the air. These are appealing pictures that invite careful perusal. The subject is not likely to make this a popular book, but this unique union of excellence in text and pictures should be made available in libraries. Ronald A. Van de Voorde, Graduate Library School, University of Arizona, Tucson
