PreSchool-Grade 1 It is festival time in what appears to be an old European village, and the Papagini Bear circus band is scheduled to perform. The band is a success, but during the post performance activities, Little Bear disappears. He is found in the clock tower and returns to ground level via a bunch of balloons from the balloon vendor. The multiple muddled plots and expressionless bear characters make for a humdrum picture book. The scenes at the inn, the town square, and the clock tower are revealed in full spreads of oil colors mixed with white and gray. The Papagini Bears are described as ``tired but happy'' and ``they ate and chatted and drank and laughed,'' yet the scenes lack any sense of celebration or laughter. The five bears are indistinguishable in personality, facial features, and character. Only Little Bear is identifiable because he is the shortest of the five.
