Kindergarten-Grade 2 A seemingly hapless private eye named Gumshoe Goose manages to solve the case of the hungry kidnapper. Nabbing Fat Fox before he eats Baby Chick-Chick and the chick's stolen birthday cake is all in a day's work for the likable, although bumbling, goose. This animal yarn will attract beginning readers who are not quite ready for Quackenbush's ``Miss Mallard'' books (Prentice-Hall). The familiar story is enlivened by amusing, colorful illustrations. The controlled vocabulary does limit the story in terms of interesting or exciting dialogue, as can be found in a similarly plotted picture book, Kasza's The Wolf's Chicken Stew (Putnam, 1987), but the short chapters and predictability of the events should make it a popular item on the beginning reader shelves.
