PreSchool-K-- Miss Poppy wants to bake a honey cake, but first she must borrow ingredients from her accommodating neighbors. Each warns the improvident pig that one day she ". . . will need something no one else has." However, Miss Poppy does find the last ingredient, salt, in her own cupboard. When the two "good, rich" honey cakes are golden brown, Miss Poppy delivers a piece of one to each kindly neighbor. The second she eats all by herself, down to the last crumb! This may be The Little Red Hen turned inside out, but it has its own appeal. Though we fear Miss Poppy may be headed for disappointment, we rejoice to find that she does indeed have all the ingredients she needs for her baking. Never mind those slightly smug neighbors; our heroine wins out! Originally published in England, the book is small and square and illustrated with detailed, humorous watercolors. The charming endpapers contain "Miss Poppy's Very Own Honey Cake Recipe." The homeyness of Miss Poppy's kitchen, her forays into the English countryside, and the attractiveness of the many bordered illustrations make this a visual treat. It should work best as a lap book for preschoolers and kindergarteners. --Gail C. Ross, Baltimore County Public Library
