A biography of the founding father, from his boyhood in Boston through his apprenticeship in the publishing business to his accomplishments as a printer, scientist, inventor, and statesman.

From School Library Journal:
Osborne's biography has the intimate style and sensitive character study found in her fiction. The book reads much like a novel, and is therefore not intimidating. Unfortunately, her text is marred by repetitious or vague writing and choppy sentences. The text includes many pertinent illustrations, including portraits of Franklin and his wife, pages from important doucuments, and drawings of Philadelphia buildings and houses. The organization is mostly chronological with chapter titles naming the various "lives" or roles Franklin played, and there are occasional, carefully chosen quotes from Franklin himself. An ambitious four-and-a-half page list of achievements at the back of the book differentiates this biography from others for the age level, such as Cass R. Sandak's (Watts, 1986). Also included are descriptions of some of the most interesting, even humorous events in Franklin's life, and a few of the critical comments about Franklin made by some of his contemporaries. This book gives readers a vivid picture of Franklin the brilliant inventor, statesman, and writer, who hobnobbed with kings but ever remained a sensible, unpretentious, common man at heart, and it also gives them easily understandable definitions of the historical movements of the time. A book that will be helpful in creating interest among those readers who are not aware of the vast contributions Franklin made to our society, but one that is not particularly well written. --Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, TX

From Publishers Weekly:
This thoroughly researched and comprehensive biography, though interesting in a fact-finding sense, falls short in presenting a well-rounded portrayal of the man himself. Not enough facets of Franklin's life and works are developed in sufficient detail to allow children to conjure up an image of a lifestyle so different from their own experience. The writing style is for the most part straightforward, and Osborne's ( Best Wishes, Joe Brady ; Last One Home ) evident enthusiasm for her subject should engage those readers with a taste for historical biographies. Photographs and document reproductions help to enliven a somewhat somber presentation. Ages 9-12.

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition with Number Line to 1. This book bears the signature of Paul McCartney. Or probably not. It does bear the signature of somebody McCartney. The name McCartney is penned off the top edge of the first front end paper. Close call. This is the first time I've listed a book written by Mary Pope Osborne, who has authored many books for older children, teenagers. Forty or so years ago I went to a bar with a friend of mine in New York City that she and her husband owned. She and my friend became good friends. As I recall, he once asked her if she wanted to take a trip to Ireland with him. He was only kidding, I think. Anyway, he was a writer and he and I lost track of one another, and after he died in California, I called a friend of his there who told me that my friend had left his half-finished autobiography to Ms. Osborne. I wrote to her and asked if she could send me a copy, but never heard back. None of which must be of any interest to anybody who's reading this. As to the book, finding a dust jacketed first edition is not easy. I found only one other and it is selling for $50.00. The covers of this book are in quite solid condition. They are very clean. The silver lettering on the spine is nicely bright. There is a thin line of color loss/fading off the bottom edge of the front and rear cover. There's a tiny crease above the rear bottom corner. There is a little crinkling at the spine ends. The six cover edges are in very good shape. The four corners are also in very good shape. The three page edges have some light dust staining/specking. However, it does not appear to have migrated onto the actual pages, at least no more than a speck on a few. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. A small part of the bottom edge of the front inside cover is red, like the spine, and a tiny bit of it bled onto the first couple of pages, just a little off the bottom edge. There do not seem to be any creases on any of the pages. There are no markings. No attachments (NOT ex-library). And beside the signature of Paul McCartney, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's in very nice shape. There's just a little crinkling off the top edge of the spine. The flaps are also in solid shape. There is a tiny crease at top corner of the front flap (the corner next to the middle edge it shares with the front cover). There's also a thin strip of light toning off the top edge of both flaps. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the jacket: 'Mary Pope Osborne has published four previous novels for young adults. Ms. Osborne brings her novelist's skill in characterization to this biography, her first nonfiction work for Dial. The biography follows Franklin from youth to a penniless printer's apprentice through his long and extraordinary life to his final days as an elder statesman at the Constitutional Convention. Franklin brought his intense curiosity about the world, his energy, and wit to everything he did, from creating lightning rods to negotiating peace treaties. Black-and-white illustrations from the period round out the portrait of this remarkable man who helped shape the character of America.'. Seller Inventory # 004399
