PreSchool-Grade 2-- What better way to attract children to the English language than with a colorfully illustrated and delightful selection of collective nouns. MacCarthy includes the familiar: "a pride of lions"; and "a herd of elephants"; while others excite the imagination: "a knot of toads"; "a murder of crows"; and "a clowder of cats." Ruth Heller's A Cache of Jewels (Putnam, 1987) is similar in size and format, but there are few duplications in nouns. Few readers may leave either book ready to chant, "a horde of gnats!" the next time they are confronted with the creatures, but the concept serves to tickle the funnybone and simply allows words to be playful. As in Mahy's 17 Kings and 42 Elephants (Dial, 1987), MacCarthy's batik paintings on silk gracefully illustrate the nouns in washes of generous, bright colors, expressing a freedom and joy that complement the poetic imagery of the language. --Gratia Banta, Germantown Public Library, OH
