Kindergarten-Grade 3 An original tale of animal antagonism. Herbert Binns is very small, even for a mouse, but what he lacks in physical stature he makes up for in mental agility. Along with his gymnastic and musical talents, he reads backwards and is an ingenious inventor. For that he is hated by arch enemies McTabbity the rabbit, Zip the rat, and Measly the weasel, all of whom plot to humiliate Herbert. They steal the starting pin to his newest inventionthe flying tricycleright before its public debut. Of course, Herbert is too smart not to have a spare, and the three are left to watch a triumphant Herbert fly off into the sunset. The adversarial adventure and buoyant rhythmic text will make this a winner with the read-aloud audience. Expressive full-color paintings in muted tones are the perfect extension of the text's understated humor and the delightfully devious characters. This isn't a unique storyline, but its appeal is tried and true. Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, Wis .
