If the subject of bats isn't quite icky enough to attract readers to this swell collection of riddles, Rubel's wonderfully bizarre, goofy illustrations, in great Day-Glo colors, certainly will. Rubel is best known, perhaps, for her obstreperous cat, Rotten Ralph, and brings the same sense of mischief to these pictures. Hall and Eisenberg's riddles are an equally lively mix of just plain dumb and pretty clever, with plenty in-between: "What do you get if you cross a bat and a hatchet? A battle-ax." Answers are just below the riddle, in somewhat smaller type. Laughter is a great way to help beginning readers feel comfortable with books, and there's a laugh a page here.
