Rhino's impetuosity and housemate Mouse's meticulousness clash in comic fashion as the friends celebrate a holiday, get Rhino out of a tight spot, and dress up as each other for a costume party

PreSchool-Grade 2?Readers will immediately fall in love with these two friends. In the first chapter, Rhino toots a trumpet to wake up Mouse, declaring that today is "National Mouse and Rat Day" and that he is going to do all the day's work. His intentions are admirable, but the very funny results are not Mouse's idea of "help": fried eggs covered with chocolate sauce and catsup for breakfast; a thorough washing of his dusty books; a house newly painted with big spots of red, blue, yellow, and green paint; and the gift of a new pet?a large cat. The antics continue in two more amusing, easy-to-read stories. Those who love James Marshall's "George and Martha" (Houghton) and Arnold Lobel's "Frog and Toad" (HarperCollins) will delight in these two new best friends. Lanfredi's zany watercolors are bright and lively?just right for these appealing stories.?Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, IA

Gr. 2. These three short stories feature friends Rhino and Mouse. In the first, Rhino takes it upon himself to make National Rat and Mouse Day a memorable one for his friend. Then, Mouse helps Rhino get a horn unstuck from a pipe, with mixed results. Finally, the two argue and then make up as they dress for a costume party. The silly goings-on are highlighted by bright, lively artwork. Recommended for larger collections where easy readers circulate heavily. Ilene Cooper
