Kindergarten-Grade 3?An attractive beginning reader. Sisters Caroline Rose and Ivy enjoy summer on their farm, especially time spent in their favorite spot?the hayloft. It's a great place to play, rain or shine, and seems like the perfect place to spend the night?if you don't mind spiders, mice, and bats. The realistic watercolor-and-gouache pictures are lively, well placed, and help set the mood for the different episodes. These siblings are appealing characters who really have fun together, even when it's scorching hot. This book is right on target for newly independent readers come summer, fall, winter, or spring.?Gale W. Sherman, Pocatello Public Library, ID

Gr. 1-2. In an easy-to-read book, Caroline Rose and her little sister, Ivy, have fun on the farm where they live. The action is funny; the words are simple and lovely ("All they saw was hay. All they heard was silence"); and the pictures on every page capture the warmth and independence of the kids and their cat as well as the physicalness of the place. There are no adults in the story, and many city readers will envy the girls' freedom, especially in the last episode when they take sleeping bags, popcorn, and flashlights and spend the night in the hayloft.
