The repetitive phrases, predictable plot progression, just a bit of tension, and satisfying resolution are all age appropriate. Wickstrom's pen-and-ink and watercolor cartoon illustrations are animated and bright. The expressions on the animals' faces are particularly amusing, especially the wide-eyed and bewildered rooster who can't figure out where his "cock-a-doodle-doo" has gone.
