Reviews

Grade 2-5. With riddles such as "What did the mummy say when he got angry with the skeleton? 'I have a bone to pick with you,'" this lively collection of puns and jokes is likely to be frightfully popular both as a read aloud and read alone and is more accessible for less advanced readers than Dave Ross's Mummy Madness (Watts, 1979; o.p.). Rubel's brightly colored cartoon mummies have an amazing range of facial expressions. Is that a mummified Rotten Ralph on the title page? Both librarians and teachers will want to use Mummy Riddles to wrap up a book talk or a unit on ancient Egypt, and it's dead certain to tickle the funny bones of newly independent readers.?Eunice Weech, M. Gr. 1^-3. From the pun on the dedication page ("to my mummy") to the riddle about how mummies like their coffee ("De-coffin-ated"), the droll and grisly wordplay will appeal to new readers as much as Hall and Eisenberg's other riddle books in the Dial Easy-to-Read series. The bright, detailed illustrations are as deadpan and silly as the words. "Of corpse! Of corpse!" Hazel Rochman
