Teddy Bear wakes on a crisp fall morning to breakfast in bed, and his day only gets better as he kicks through fallen leaves with his cat, plays checkers with Dad, and bakes cookies with Mom.

McQuade (Christmas with Teddy Bear, 1996, etc.) narrates the events of Teddy Bear's day, beginning with breakfast in bed and ending with tucking back in for another night's sleep. Appearing in extra-large type are simple captions--``Playing outside'' or ``Having a tea party''--opposite full-page oil paintings. Under every caption is a detail painting of something related to the activity--a pot of jam, a leaf, or a plate of cupcakes, and a few more sentences about the day. The illustrations are striking, employing dark outlines and bold painterly strokes, with the texture of the canvas showing beneath the paint; warm colors evoke the coziness of home. Beginning readers will appreciate the large captions but find the story lacking; it will appeal most to preschoolers seeking comfort and reassurance. PreSchool-K. Realistic oil paintings present a very snuggly bear and the daily activities he shares with a cuddly kitten. Teddy has breakfast in bed; he and the kitten play outside; bake cookies with mom; play chess with dad; have a tea party; and, finally, have a story and are tucked into bed. On the left-hand page, a large-print caption that young children will soon "read" describes the activity, followed by a few brief sentences of elaboration. Illustrations on the right are in strong, deep hues with the bear's textured fur as the focal point of each picture. This gentle, quiet selection is satisfying as a lap book or for a storytime where bears are special guests.?Virginia Opocensky, formerly at Lincoln City Libraries, NE
