PreS-Gr 1-The superstition that it is bad luck to step on a crack in the sidewalk is the premise for this tongue-in-cheek, "what if" story. A boy is warned of the dire consequences of not heeding the old adage. Readers learn of the preposterous outcomes that might occur, such as turning into a girl, his dad deciding to become a hippie, his baby brother growing fangs, discovering that his best friend is really a monster in disguise, and on and on. Cartoonlike illustrations in water-based ink complement the zaniness of this rather slight picture book.
