Grade 6-10-Mayer gives what biographical details are known about each of the major and minor prophets, including Moses, Elijah, Elisha, and Samuel. Context, the main points of the prophet's message, and a quotation or two complete each entry. There are some beautiful portraits here, by well- and little-known artists. Yet the thinness of the narrative, the relative lack of drama in the color paintings, and the distance of the subjects from readers combine to make this work less impressive than the author's other religion/art books. Several pages have errors (from "eminent" for "imminent" to dangling modifiers). Audience confusion is also possible: the text content and style are more advanced than the picture-book format signals. Both historical and "literary" prophets are significant contributors to Western culture, and this book may help stem the tide of biblical illiteracy, but it is a minor title in the Mayer canon.

Gr. 6-10. Mayer, who has written about other biblical figures--Jesus, the apostles, Mary--focuses this picture book for older readers on the Old Testament prophets. Some, like Moses, Jonah, and Daniel, will be well known through their bible stories; others range from the familiar (Elijah and Ezekiel) to the obscure (Amos, Obadiah). For those who have a biblical background or are interested in the subject, this won't be a waste of time. Mayer writes simply, yet impressively, about figures who held moral sway over their own times and whose influence is still felt today. As in previous books, Mayer has chosen great works of art to illustrate her work, each one framed by an elegant golden border and set against pages subtly embellished with Hebrew words. The subject matter may be a harder sell, but this is certainly a lovely book with a majestic treatement that matches its formidable subjects. Ilene Cooper
