Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 1-The big white mouse and a little brown mouse from My Love for You (Dial, 1997) are back, this time expressing their affection for one another throughout the months of the year. They share sunny days, boxes of chocolates, fireworks, and much more. The text is simple ("My love for you is warmer than a snowsuit in JANUARY" or "brighter than MAY wildflowers") and the comparisons are just right for the intended audience. Made from a wide variety of colored and textured papers, the multilayered cut-paper collages are filled with colorful details. The warm hues perfectly match the story's sentiment. A gentle book for one-on-one snuggling, as well as a wonderful way to learn about the months and the vocabulary of emotions.

PreS. Building on her successful counting book, My Love for You (1997), Roth uses the same techniques--pithy yet endearing text and eye-catching illustrations--to introduce the seasons and the months of the year. A big white mouse explains to her little brown mouse how much she loves him. In January, her love "is warmer than a snowsuit." It's "sweeter than heart-shaped chocolates" in February, and by June it's "sunnier than the longest day." All of this love is demonstrated in two-page spreads of delicious collage art, soft and lovely and tickled with humor as the mice dress up as cats in October and read together during a day at the beach in June. Many artists work with collage, but Roth manipulates her delicate, beautifully shaded papers in ways that appeal to both the adult eye and the child's sensibility. At the book's conclusion children will find they have also learned a small lesson in comparative adverbs: the final spread shows all the love words together--softer, sweeter, brighter, rosier, and more.
