Poems perfect for a year in the life - a dog's life, that is!
Day in, day out, our dogs are there for it all. But they see holidays quite differently than we do - Halloween, for example, is when you can't tell the real cats from the costumes! And, of course, dogs have special days of their own, like Hole Digging Day or the dreaded Visit to the Vet Day. Perfect for dog lovers of all ages, this clever book by one of the leading children's poets celebrates all those days and more, looking at a whole year in the life of our canine companions.

Miki Sakamoto has illustrated numerous picture books for young readers. She lives in Los Angeles.
In these short poems, dogs talk about their fun, mischievous experiences through the seasons, sharing their own special loves and hates along the way. The small Scottie is not into the fireworks on the Fourth of July, but the bulldog pup enjoys grabbing a steak from the barbecue while everyone is looking at the sky. All of the dogs hate grooming day, and the bright collage images show them fuming in fancy bows (“I can try to refuse, / hide my leash, / chew her shoes”). Spring, though, brings a chance to get thoroughly dirty again and roll joyfully in the mud. Cat chasing is a special treat, even when the cat gets away. The playful rhymes are very simple and filled with physical action, and the rhythm in the words will have young preschoolers joining in (“I must dig a hole / to look for a mole / to bury a bone / to be all alone”). Sakamoto’s unframed illustrations extend the humor and feeling in the scenarios, especially the cuddles and standoffs between pets and their owners. Preschool-Grade 2. --Hazel Rochman
