The Economy in Question focuses on the current turning point in the British economy, where many of the old certainties are in doubt: the UK′s role as a manufacturing nation; the large factory in an urban setting; the availability of full-time work; and the very nature of work. The authors examine what kind of economy is emerging and what pattern of uneven development is being laid down. The authors explore the changing position of the UK within the international order and the implications of global change for the national economy. The impact of deindustrialization upon the industrial base and the transformation of the base itself are examined. They ask whether we are witnessing: the shift to a high-tech industrial future the end of mass production and the rise of a more flexible economy the emergence of a post-industrial service economy Each type of change is debated from clearly defined theoretical viewpoints, and as such this volume will be valuable for students and professionals in sociology, economics, geography, and political science.
