Synopsis

"It is clearly a well written book successful in its aim of examining the increasingly crucial role of counselling for those who seek help with fertility problems." --The Indian Practitioner "Carrying adequate case examples, it is clearly a well written book successful in its aim of examining the increasingly crucial role of counselling for those who seek help with fertility problems." --The Indian Practitioner "This volume . . . helpfully includes a glossary of terms; the latest in fertility medical techniques and considerations (including HIV status of donors/recipients); case examples; and resources." --Sala Horowitz in Academic Library Book Review "I recommend this book to any professional involved in any way with human fertility. It covers the issues involved and the skills required in concise, clear and readable prose, and its list of references provides an excellent bibliography." --David Clegg in British Journal of Guidance and Counselling "A subtitle to Counselling for Fertility Problems could well be "A Practical Guide", for at last we have an inexpensive, easily readable, well-indexed resource book for all involved in work where fertility issues may arise. Specifically the book focusses on both those who are infertile and those who have an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy... Jane Read′s contribution has eased the task of those of us working in this challenging area and it should also help many others working in related fields." --Mary Griffin in Sexual & Marital Therapy Written specifically for all those working with clients who seek help with fertility issues, Counseling for Fertility Problems presents step-by-step guidelines for managing the psychological difficulties that go along with fertility problems. Jane Read takes the counseling process through from the beginning phase (facing the key issues), through the middle phase (facing the loss), to the end (facing the future). The most appropriate forms of counseling at each stage of the process are described and illustrated with carefully chosen case examples. The book looks at the issues surrounding abortion counseling, fertility and sexuality, and donation and donors. It also discusses development of fertility counseling. Although the emotional and psychological needs of those undergoing fertility treatment have been acknowledged, they have usually come second to the task of correcting the infertility and achieving a pregnancy. This book, however, recognizes those needs and aims to give clients the priority, the attention, and the help they deserve.
