Twenty-two leading economists discuss a number of crucial issues such as the decline in the growth rate of the state′s economy, the alarming rise in unemployment, the repatriation of Gulf migrants, agriculture stagnation, industrial backwardness, and the financial crisis presently afflicting Kerala. Kerala′s Economy begins with an overview of broad trends in Kerala′s economy and continues with demographic trends, the changing structure of the workforce, poverty, and migration. The contributors also cover the agricultural and allied sectors including marine fisheries, small-scale and heavy industry, power sectors, trade unionism, educational development, and Kerala′s external economy. The book concludes with recent trends in the state′s finances. "This volume of essays is a welcome addition to the existing literature on Kerala′s economy." --Economic and Political Weekly "It is surprising there are so few publications that provide a comprehensive picture of the state′s economy . . . This gap has largely been filled by [this book] . . . Its canvas is much wider than just the state′s development model and will, therefore, be of considerable benefit to those studying the state′s economic development." -The Economic Times
