Grade 8 Up An obvious tale set on the campus of a small southern college. Sa mantha willingly loses her virginity while accidentally under the influence of alcohol. Her guilt feelings focus mainly on having been unfaithful to her high- school boyfriend, who goes to another school. The attitude toward sex that she and her boyfriend shared had been that ``they weren't ready for childrenso they weren't ready for sex.'' The under lying message here, if there is one at all, is that college should be a time to meet new people, have new experiences, and learn on many levels. Sam is forced to become socially aware on a broad scale when she and her classmates experience ``hunger'' for a week as they live on a poverty diet. She also becomes involved in a demonstration to force the college to divest itself of holdings in South Africa. Blake's introduction of the outside world into this trite romance is a plus. However, the outcome is unbelievable, and the characterization of the leader of the group as a hothead radical is unfortu nate. All-Nighter is just another ro mance which will be enjoyed by its ad dicted target audience in spite of its predictable plot and stereotypical characters.
