Set against the colorful milieu of a professional soccer leaguea touch ironic since the sport no longer exists in the U.S.this is nonetheless a crackling good mystery about a killer who is eliminating the members of a championship team. The plot is a familiar one, but the soccer twist provides a unique, if brutal, means of murder, as the victims are literally kicked to death. Attempting to track down the killer is photographer Paul McGuire, who has been following the New Jersey Stars, specifically, their controversial French hero, Goddet, who becomes the first victim. McGuire, who discovers Goddet's body, then becomes the target of the killer, who seems to be taunting the photographer with each successive death. The authors (J. D. Reed wrote Free Fall have done a nice job in providing a good cast of suspects, and the plot works its way neatly to a tight climax.
