The startling archaeological discoveries that have recently brought world-wide attention to the Philippines have been richly augmented as a direct result of investigations by the authors of this book. The first extensively recorded excavation of a burial site yielding significant quantities of the highly controversial, earliest type of blue-and-white, was initiated by the Locsins in the Santa Ana district of Manila in 1961. Since then a total of more than 200 graves have been opened, revealing further evidence of the vast numbers of little-know Oriental export wares traded into the Philippines between the 11th and 14th centuries. This edition provides a complete record of the excavations made by the Locsins in this area.
The skill and craftsmanship of the ancient Chinese potter reflect the glory that was China, and her priceless heritage of magnificent ceramics is vividly illustrated by the exquisite pieces discovered in the Philippines and preserved in the Locsin collection. Through their own discoveries, plus discriminating acquisitions from other major Philippine sites like Puerto Galera and Calatagan, the Locsins have built up one of the most important collections of early Chinese trade porcelains in the world.
Carefully recording each discovery, the authors have furnished an invaluable source of reference for future studies of Chinese pottery and associated artifacts..wares that entered the Islands over a period of nearly one thousand years.
