About the Author

Toni Packer is a leading teacher of spiritual awakening through meditation. Born in Germany, she moved to the United States in 1951 at the age of twenty-four. In 1967, she joined the Rochester Zen Center, becoming a student and later dharma successor to Roshi Philip Kapleau. In the mid 1970s, she encountered the work of J. Krishnamurti, which stimulated and eventually resolved increasing doubts about working in an established religious tradition. In 1981, she established the Springwater Center for Meditative Inquiry and Retreats, a non-sectarian center, not associated with any particular tradition. Toni Packer is the author of Seeing Without Knowing (1983), What is Meditative Inquiry?, (1988) The Work of this Moment (1990), and conducts retreats in the United States and in Europe.
