Synopsis

With Beginning Japanese Phrases Language Practice Pad you can master essential Japanese phrases in just minutes a day!

Although more people are studying the Japanese language than ever before, others are still wary of starting because they believe "it's too difficult." But Beginning Japanese Phrases Language Practice Pad will show absolute beginners that Japanese is in many ways much easier than other languages, and it will help intermediate Japanese learners review and improve upon their past studies and practice Japanese every day. Japanese is a fascinating language that uses Chinese characters (kanji) as well as two other alphabets (hiragana and katakana). After a few weeks of gradual progress, your ability to read Japanese, write Japanese and speak Japanese will grow tremendously.

This calendar-like desk companion is divided into monthly topics and builds upon itself, one day at a time. Japanese phrases are kept short, simple and functional.

Each of the 332 pages includes these four components:

  • The phrase or dialogue in Japanese characters.
  • A transliteration using English letters (romanji), which gives English speakers a guide to pronunciation.
  • The English translation.
  • A related note about the phrase, Japan, or Japanese culture to add context.

From the Author

Japanese Phrase-A-Day comes after Chinese Phrase-A-Day. Like the Chinese version, it is not in calendar format- so you can start anytime of year and not rush through the phrases; there is a stand so it lays at an angle on your desk or counter; there is an audio recording by myself and my co-author so you can hear the languages spoken by native speakers; and the phrases are useful, and vocabulary is repeated so you can actually learn the language. On each page, there is also a grammar explanation about the phrase above or a tidbit about Japan.

The phrases in each version of the book are different; and they were chosen based on my experience living, working, and traveling in Japan. There are certain thing that you will want to say in Japan that you will not need to say in China, for example; be it in relation to the food, transport, culture or something else.

Writing this book with my co-author was fun and time-consuming. She was between Pusan, Korea and Kobe, Japan while I was between Saigon and Portland, Oregon. We have known each other since I worked as a teacher on the JET Program in Osaka, Japan, from 1995-1997. Keiko teaches Japanese full time in Korean universities, and I run Academic Experiences Abroad (AEA) that customizes academic-minded programs to Asia, and some other parts of the world, for universities and other groups.
