Michael G. LaFosse has been creating paper sculpture since childhood and is internationally regarded as one of the world's leading authorities on origami. Trained as a biologist but working as an artist, he is best known for his origami animals, sea shells and plants made from his own handmade paper. LaFosse's artistic work has graced museums worldwide, including the Louvre; the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona; and Hangar 7 in Salzburg, Austria. His commercial art draws attention to upscale retail stores such as Hermes of Paris and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Richard L. Alexander co-founded the Origamido Studio, a teaching center, gallery and design studio, with Michael G. LaFosse in 1996. As a designer, his specialties have included biology (systems ecology) and landscape architecture. Together, Alexander and LaFosse have created over 50 books, kits, and videos about paper and paper arts.
Greg Mudarri has lived, traveled, and taught in Japan, and is an avid origami enthusiast. Greg has studied origami under Michael G. LaFosse and is an instructor, papermaker and graphics designer at Origamido Studio.
"Washi paper simply inspire beauty in our lives and it's fun to make!" —Origami Blog
"This book's chief value lies in the highly detailed and well illustrated instructions for making washi, a beautiful and highly desirable Japanese handmade paper. A lovely book for paper crafters."—Library Journal
"More than a book about origami, this is a book about paper. Michael G. LaFosse and Richard L. Alexander run Origamido Studio, where they make their own folding paper, and here they share their knowledge of making different types of Washi paper, all with photo illustrations." —Gilad's Origami Page
"[...] expands the art of paperfolding to show how it can be used to add beauty to unexpected parts of our lives. The 17 projects in this book stem from washi papercraft techniques, and guide you in the creation of such wonders as a paper clutch purse, a gorgeous vase cover, a whimsical sailboat envelope, and a sewn washi book printed with your own poems or whatever you'd like." —Castle in the Air blog
"Japanese Paper Crafting is a re-release of the 2007 book for Tuttle Publishing by Michael G. LaFosse with Richard L. Alexander and Greg Mudarri. With paper crafting so hot, and washi practically a household name thanks to the popularity of washi tape, I can see why they would bring this one out again. The included history of washi and detailed instructions for making your own are informative, and the projects have an elegance due at least in part to the use of such gorgeous paper." —All Things Paper blog
