Grade 5-9 Although the Milnes present many interesting facts about soil, its formation, and inhabitants, their text plods along in a monotonous fashion. Overuse of the second-person pronoun ``you'' gives the book a condescending tone. The black-and-white illustrations do nothing to add to the book's attractiveness, and there are no photographs. The World Beneath Our Feet: the Story of Soil (Messner, 1974) by Martin L. Keen is written and illustrated in a more appropriate style for the same age group. Barbara B.
