In the turmoil following Poland's defeat in 1939 Karol was forced into exile in the USSR. Initially attracted by the promise of Soviet life, he settled in Rostov, studied arduously, found love, and even volunteered to fight the Nazis as a member of the Soviet air force. Later, a minor offense brought him afoul of the authorities, and he experienced the darker side of Soviet life in the gulag. His book is far more than a simple recollection of the war. At its best, it provides an incisive account of the hopes of wartime Russians and renders an even more poignant look into the nature of the Slavic soul. Though long a citizen of France, Karol evaluates his experiences without ideological bias, and without forgetting Russia's "sorrows endured and hopes disappointed." Highly recommended to libraries with Eastern European collections. Joseph W. Constance, Jr., Georgia State Univ. Lib., Atlanta
