Reviews

Kindergarten-Grade 5 Hague has selected and illustrated 30 of Stevenson's poems for this glossy full-color edition. The poems themselves are as lovely as ever, proving that the finest children's poetry speaks with such an elemental voice that its appeal and freshness do not fade with time. "The Unseen Playmate," for example, is about the very real sense of fantasy that hovers at the edge of a child's day. Children have a natural love for poetry this good, and a new edition of Stevenson's work is welcome, especially since many of the fine older titles are out of print. Unfortunately, Hague's illustrations are not consistently suitable for these simple and endearing verses. His illustration for "The Land of Nod" shows his strengths: a child stands within an imaginative border, surrounded by stars and planets and the elements of a dream. Technically, it is very effective, and conveys a wonderful sense of fantasy and movement. Yet Hague's depiction of people is his weakness. His faces look disconcertingly lifeless and strained, and they give the whole book a cold feeling. Michael Foreman's A Child's Garden of Verses (Delacorte, 1985) captures the spirit of the poems better. Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, Ill.
