Reviews

Originally sent to the gulag as a common criminal, Marchenko finished his life there, both a victim of maltreatment and a respected human rights activist and author. Here he chronicles his months of "freedom" in Russia after an initial prison term and his reimprisonment after publication of his My Testimony (o.p.), the first major expose of post-Stalin labor camps. Unlike many dissidents, Marchenko was raised by illiterate provincial workers; his description here of the violence, brutality, and incomprehensible poverty of the Siberian countryside is even more shocking than what he says about labor camp conditions. Marchenko died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1986, after spending 20 of his 48 years in the Soviet penal system. His final memoir is moving, readable, and not at all self-righteous.
