Discoverer of the first antibiotics, Dubos (1901-82) first began his career in soil science. His work on soil microbes, which break down plant cellulose, led to parallel work on a microbe that would break down pneumococcus, the bacteria that causes pneumonia. While his orientation changed from agriculture to medicine, Dubos's concern for the Earth remained constant, and his work on behalf of the environment helped change public policy. This collection presents 43 essays and papers in eight sections: Celebrations of Life; From Soil Ecology; The Antibiotics; Living with Microbes; Civilization and Human Biology; Reason and Will; Man in the Biosphere; The Built Environment; and Think Globally, Act Locally. Important for students of scientific and environmental research.
