Reviews

No matter how often color wheels and furniture arrangements are discussed, how-tos of decorating a home simply remain a mystery to most people. Former magazine editor Wissinger clears up confusion by dividing the subject into what she perceives as three easy parts: the big picture, or an examination of overall plans, colors, and styles; room-by-room analysis; and details about lighting, flooring, woodwork, and other design elements. Her treatment and explanations are far superior to those in other existing texts. The inclusion of checklists and exercises (or questions to answer) will, indeed, save time and money and result in a well-conceived living space. Appended is information on working with a design professional, a sample budget for a living room, and sample cost breakdowns. Barbara Jacobs

Wissinger takes the reader step by step through the process of analyzing lifestyle and living space when home decorating. Dividing her book into three sections, she covers overall planning, room-by-room design, and specifics, including furniture, flooring, and wall covering. Chapters contain particularly helpful questions and exercises that take into account the needs of other family members and pets, as well as considerations such as recycling and the home office. Though this workbook has surprisingly few illustrations, a bibliography of inspiring illustrated works is included. This inexpensive work can be used for one-room design or a whole-house remodeling. Recommended for public libraries.
