Gr 7-10--These colorful, slender, information-packed volumes depend on scientific taxonomy to group and explain the nature of living things. In the first book, the Silversteins point out the ongoing disagreements among scientists about the placement of many organisms. In this volume, protists are considered to be single-celled organism that have a nucleus while monerans are without an organized nucleus. The variety of bacteria and cyanobacteria that make up kingdom Monera provides fascinating insights into these tiny but important life forms. Protists such as amoebas, sporozoans, and diatoms are also introduced and grouped. Viruses, which do not belong to the kingdom because they are not made up of cells, are also covered to show their relationship to protists and monerans.
