The co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for 1994 offers a compelling vision of the future for the Middle East, in which he sees a reconstructed region free of past conflicts, allowing a social and economic revival, and provides a cogent analysis showing how this peace can be achieved.

In September 1993, Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin publicly promised the world on the front lawn of the White House that Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization would henceforth work together in the pursuit of peace in the Middle East. This amazing accord, akin to the earlier demolition of the Berlin Wall, was the result of intense negotiations by a small group of visionary Palestinians, Israelis, Americans, and Norwegians. The only thing they had in common was a vision of peaceful coexistence in an area that has been washed with too much blood. As one of the primary participants, Peres, currently the Israeli minister for foreign affairs, describes some of the process that led to that historic event. More importantly, he eloquently speaks of the vision and philosophies that brought the process into being. The articulation of how Israelis and Palestinians (with their Arab compatriots) can move from today's challenges into tomorrow's opportunities is nothing short of inspirational. Peres's book should be required reading for everyone, and all libraries should have it in their collection. See also Barry Rubin's Revolution Until Victory? , reviewed below.--Ed.
