Gr. 2-4. Amy, a third-grader, has lost 172 straight ping pong games and 112 straight checkers games to her brother Peter, who will always be "two years older and two years bigger." Determined to best him in something, she memorizes dozens of riddles, but Peter always knows the answers. Finally, Amy makes up her own riddles and earns her brother's grudging respect. Younger siblings will recognize Amy's feelings and enjoy her triumph. The plot moves at a good pace, sped along by the inclusion of pictures and conversation. Chesworth uses ink with gray washes for the lively illustrations, one for each of the nine chapters. The pictures alone indicate that the main characters are African American. With fairly large type and a pleasantly small format, this attractive chapter book will appeal to kids who have recently moved up to the fiction section. Carolyn Phelan
Grade 3-4-Amy has lost 172 ping-pong games in a row to her older brother, and he certainly doesn't mind gloating about it. In despair at ever having a chance to do something better than Peter, she turns to riddles. He answers all the ones she finds in books from the school library-he's already read them. Finally, she begins making up her own, stumps her suddenly admiring sibling, and discovers a new talent. This is a good chapter book with an enticing cover that features African American children. Transitional readers will enjoy this story, and maybe make up a few riddles of their own.
