YA-Maisey does an excellent job of tracing the evolutionary pathways of fish, as illustrated by the fossil records. It is a narrow subject, but well within the grasp of advanced biology students. The text is not overly technical, but is not simplistic.

The curator of vertebrate paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History and author of numerous books and journal articles on paleontology, Maisey describes the evolution of fishes and their relationship to us. Referring to humans as tetrapods, he notes that "our anatomy bears the indelible traces of our fish ancestry." This work can be compared to John Long's The Rise of Fishes (Johns Hopkins, 1995) in its excellent use of illustrations to help the reader understand both the concepts explained and the species described. The 121 plates are often paired to show the fossil and an artist's rendering of what the fish looked like. Maisey provides broader coverage than Long of the ray-finned fishes, which is appropriate for this most abundant and diverse group of backboned fishes today. Both the glossary and index are useful, but the absence of a bibliography is glaring. Nevertheless, this is recommended for collections with an interest in paleontology or evolution, but not necessarily as a starting point for research.?Jean E.
