Proctor explains that naturalizing is the practice of situating bulbous plants in parts of the garden where they will flourish with little care, flowering and multiplying with abandon or at least holding their own with complementary plants. The latest of Proctor's seven books is aimed at beginners, giving tips on planting, soil preparation, watering, and pest control. Proctor offers instructions on creating a rock garden, a woodland garden, and gardens along streams, ponds, and lakes. He divides the book into the four seasons, explaining which plants will grow best in each season and what chores need to be done. There is a list of 400 species of bulbs, with data on their geographic region, height, color, bloom time, garden uses, moisture and sun and soil requirements, and natural habitat. This informative book will contain 90 color photographs. George Cohen

Gardeners looking for a source of information on selecting bulbs requiring little maintenance to create a natural look should check out this book. Proctor, a horticultural writer and teacher at Denver Botanic Gardens, tells how effectively to use a variety of bulbs with other ornamental plants in a garden. Illustrated with attractive color photos, his discussion includes how to choose bulbs that will work in an individual garden and how to make the best planting decisions when selecting bulbs. An appendix for each bulb species provides height, color, geographic region, bloom time, garden use, water, sunlight, soil requirements, and plant origin.
