A friendly introduction to pancake making by a most stylish culinary cat-Tallulah!

Tallulah is a cat. You might say she is something of a pancake expert. Not every kind she creates turns out perfectly, of course-the coconut and jelly bean filled variety was not a big hit. But her marshmallow and sliced banana pancakes are simply divine. Today, Tallulah is going to make her special Blueberryalicious Pancakes. And while Tallulah takes her cooking very seriously, she and her friends also know how to have fun in the kitchen.

Step by step, from buying all the ingredients to flipping the last pancake, Tallulah introduces young children to the joys of cooking.

Reviews

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Tallulah the cat loves to make pancakes for her friends. Experimenting with flavors (mixing the batter with coconut and jelly beans is a big mistake), she decides to use blueberries. The text alternates between Tallulah's story and cooking tips, recipes, and comments from her pals. The gouache illustrations include newsprint that allows the type to show through the painted colors. The busy pages are filled with different fonts, hand-lettered text, and the newsprint, making for highly detailed pictures that are saturated in vivid hues. An additional purchase where pancakes are in hot demand.-Lisa Gangemi Kropp, Middle Country Public Library, Centereach, NY

K-Gr. 2. Wolff offers a loving treatise on a favorite breakfast food as well as a kids' guide to kitchen procedures and safety. Tallulah, a cat and avid cook, has invited Freddie (a crocodile) and Roxie (a pig) to perform sous-chef duties as she concocts a batch of "Amazing Blueberryalicious Pancakes." An illustrated ingredient list appears at the outset, although it's inconvenient that precise quantities aren't repeated in the subsequent, narrative instructions. Promoting safe kitchen habits is a priority here (the helpers are made to "take three steps back from any appliance in use"), although Talullah's conveniently ambiguous age ("if you count in cat years, Tallulah is much older than she looks") may mislead young chefs about their readiness for kitchen independence. Still, the procedures are clear, and whimsical details in the bright collage-and-gouache artwork provide plenty to look and laugh at alongside the cookery tips. Useful for accompanying classroom cooking activities or readings of flapjack-inspired literature such as William Wise's Perfect Pancakes If You Please (1997). Jennifer Mattson
