Synopsis

Despite its size, the street sweeper has one mighty job!

The street sweeper is a little truck with a very big job. While it is not the largest, fastest, or most powerful truck, a street sweeper does something that no other truck can do: it keeps our streets clean. And a street sweeper is so much fun to watch.

Colorful illustrations and an engaging compare-and-contrast text make this picture book a delight for budding truck-lovers.

Reviews

PreSchool-K–This picture book compares and contrasts the utilitarian street sweeper with a grader, snowplow, bulldozer, and other trucks. While it may not be the largest, most powerful, or fastest machine, it performs an important job. Bright, simple cartoon illustrations of squirrels, cats, dogs, and other animals driving the vehicles are paired with the straightforward text (The electromagnetic crane can pick up a two-ton automobile. The street sweeper can pick up a gum wrapper). Endpapers feature pared-down schematic sketches of the sweeper, with both exterior and internal views and labeled parts. This offering will delight young truck lovers.–Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH

Let's hear it for the underrated street sweeper. It's not the biggest, fastest, most powerful truck, and it doesn't possess the bells and whistles of many other work vehicles--but as Jake the squirrel, certified operator of the street sweeper knows, it's the only truck that can keep the roads clean. With more impressive vehicles looming somewhat menacingly in the background, Jake and his truck quietly accomplish their important task, subtly demonstrating that even the most average Joe has a place in the scheme of things. In his first book for children, Moore uses pencil and bold, basic colors enhanced by the computer to create his cartoon-style illustrations, which depict a variety of work vehicles that are sure to please young truck lovers. Although the art style is whimsical, there is enough information about the street sweeper and the other vehicles (with more on the endpapers) to secure a parking place for this book on the shelf. Suggest this to kids who liked Kate McMullan's I'm Dirty (2006). Randall Enos
