He stresses the importance of becoming attuned to the social system that exists among fellow teachers as well as among the members of the community one serves.

About the Author
Teacher, educator, and author, Herb Kohl is presently at the Coastal Ridge Research and Education Center in Point Arena, California. He and his wife, Judith, won the National Book Award in 1978 for The View from the Oak.
