The latest volume in this series covers the three major literatures of ScotlandScots, English, and Gaelicfrom the beginnings to the present, with an appropriate emphasis on the Scots. Following the series format, it provides succinct histories, sound explications, and solid critical evaluations. Even better, this particular volume is written with a zest that makes it fascinating to read. Watson has provided very helpful vocabulary guides for the Scottish words; one wishes at times that he had provided comparable help with pronunciation. Since Scottish literature is infrequently taught in the United States, this volume's primary library value will be as a reference source. It belongs in any library that needs a compact, authoritative, readable, and up-to-date history of Scottish literature. Peter Dollard, Alma Coll. Lib., Mich.
