Grade 6 Up Russian folklore receives the same somewhat sensationalized treatment as other books in this series. The fantastic elements found in Russian folkloredemons, wizards, and wondrous creatureshave been emphasized over the equally prominent folk elements. Yet the tales are well-researched, based upon the original Russian story collections (Afanas'ev and Potebnya, among others) and are written in a readable style. Well-known characters such as Baba Yaga, Prince Ivan, Vasilisa, and the Firebird appear in several familiar tales. Also included is useful information about old Russia, its oral tradition, religious climate, pre-Christian beliefs, and even an explanation of the Russian alphabet. The drawings and full-color paintings by a contemporary Russian artist are luxurious in eerie detail. A book which has more to offer than merely stories of heroes, monsters, and other worlds. Denise A. Anton, Corn Belt Library System, Normal, Ill.

Gr. 7^-12. Folklorist Warner draws on original Russian sources, retelling the stories with direct drama and weaving them together with general discussion about their folklore motifs and history. The famous witch Baba Yaga is here, so is the evil Koshchei the Deathless; and there are chapters on giants and midgets, serpents and dragons, smiths and ploughmen. There are nature myths and Russian wonder tales of worlds above and worlds below. The individual stories are great for sharing, and the collection is an excellent resource for cross-curricular studies of Russian history and culture. Alexander Koshkin's sweeping, detailed illustrations, in black-and-white and in glowing color, show the romance and the terror, the demons and the heroes, of the shape-changing landscape. Part of the World Mythology series, this large-size, lavishly illustrated collection was first published in England in 1985. Hazel Rochman
