From the Back Cover:

Written from the perspectives of LAN management, the focus of this text is on administrative responsibilities and strategies, which range from selecting and installing LAN hardware and software to designing backup and recovery options (chapters 9-12). However, because of the need for LAN managers to consider issues important to all members of the LAN community, such as end-users, the author provides appropriate coverage of these perspectives as well.

Despite the rapid rate of technology introduction into the market, this new third edition provides up-to-date coverage and anticipates emerging technologies:

  • Novell NetWare and Windows NT Server
  • Basic data communications principles including:
  • OSI reference model (Ch 1)
  • LAN Selection Criteria (Ch 2)
  • LAN Media (Ch 3)
  • Data Link and Mac protocols (Ch 4)
  • Token Passing versus CSMA/CD (Ch 4)
  • LAN Hardware (Ch 5)
  • Hardware Selection Criteria (Ch 5)
  • LAN System Software (Ch 7)
  • Creating and Maintaining a Printing Environment (Ch 7)
  • Client/Server Computing (Ch 8)
  • LAN Installation Concerns (Ch 9)
  • Security Options and Virus Protection (Ch 10)
  • Backup, Disaster, and Recovery Planning (Ch 11)
  • Network Management and Network Management Protocols (Ch 12)
  • Wide Area Network Overview (Ch 13)
  • Repeaters, Routers, Bridges, and Gateways (Ch 14)
  • Internet and TCP/IP Protocol Suite (Ch 15)
  • Internet Technology (Ch 15)

New to this edition is a Companion Web Site at www.prenhall.com/stamper that contains some additional exercises and PowerPoint presentations for students and that allows instructors to download the Instructor's Manual as a MS WORD document.

Also new to this edition, Prentice Hall Test Manager software is available. This software package is a wonderful suite of tools for testing and assessment with five modules that allow instructors to manage student records, course information, question content, test portfolios, and test results.

PREFACE

Over the past two decades, local area networks (LANs) have had an increasingly significant impact on the way companies conduct business. With the assistance of LAN technology, both large and small companies can take advantage of the ability to share valuable hardware and software resources among multiple users. These decades saw the rise of network-oriented software (groupware), which allows people working together on a project to share ideas and information more quickly and systematically. Furthermore, network interconnections between a company's wide and local area networks, in addition to Internet and client/server technologies, have created a vast information resource. Because LANs are becoming such an integral part of today's businesses, students of management information systems and computer information systems need fundamental LAN knowledge and experience. This experience can strategically position today's students for the growing opportunities in LAN management.

This textbook provides a good foundation in the theory and practical application of LAN use and administration. Because most LANs do not exist in isolation, this text also discusses how LANs can be connected to other LANs, wide area networks (WANs), and larger mainframe computers. Finally, this text provides readers with insight into emerging LAN technologies and their potential impact on the future of LANs.

KEY THEMES AND FEATURES

FOCUS ON LAN MANAGEMENT
This text is written primarily from the perspective of LAN management. The focus is on administrative responsibilities and strategies, which range from selecting and installing LAN hardware and software to designing backup and recovery options. However, LAN administrators must often consider the issues important to other segments of the LAN community, such as users, so we provide appropriate coverage of these perspectives as well.

COMPLETE, UP-TO-DATE COVERAGE
This text discusses a variety of the most popular LAN hardware and software technologies to help prepare students for any LAN environment. For consistency, most of the examples are based on Novell and Microsoft LAN operating systems, which the majority of students will encounter as LAN administrators. Despite the rapid rate at which new LAN technology is being introduced, Local Area Networks, Third Edition, provides up-to-date coverage and anticipates emerging technology. The following is a sample of the topics covered in this text:

  • Novell NetWare and Windows NT Server
  • Basic data communication principles, including the OSI Reference Model (chapter 1)
  • LAN selection criteria (chapter 2)
  • LAN media (chapter 3)
  • Data link and MAC protocols (chapter 4)
  • Token passing versus CSMA/CD (chapter 4)
  • LAN hardware (chapter 5)
  • Hardware selection considerations (chapter 5)
  • LAN system software (chapter 7)
  • Creating and maintaining the printing environment (chapter 7)
  • Client/server computing (chapter 8)
  • LAN installation concerns (chapter 9)
  • Security options and virus protection (chapter 10)
  • Backup, recovery, and disaster planning (chapter 11)
  • Network management and network management protocols (chapter 12)
  • Wide area network overview (chapter 13)
  • Repeaters, bridges, routers, and gateways (chapter 14)
  • The Internet and TCP/IP protocol suite (chapter 15)
  • Internet technology (chapter 15)

IN-TEXT LEARNING AIDS
Pedagogical features, such as boldfaced key terms, end-of-chapter summaries, review questions, and problems and exercises, are included to fully support a learning environment. In addition, examples are used throughout the text to illustrate practical applications of LAN management.

PART OPENERS

Each part begins with a part opener that gives an overview of the topics covered in each of the part's chapters.

CHAPTER PREVIEW

Each chapter begins with a brief overview that outlines the goals of the material to be covered in the chapter.

KEY TERMS

Key words are boldfaced for easy identification when they are introduced in the chapter.

END-OF-CHAPTER MATERIAL

The end-of-chapter material begins with a summary of the key concepts. Key terms are listed for review, and review questions are provided to help students recall important ideas and concepts. These review questions, along with problems and exercises, encourage students to apply their understanding of the concepts in the chapter.

GLOSSARY

The extensive glossary includes acronyms for a comprehensive, easy-to-use reference guide.

ORGANIZATION

The text is divided into five parts:

PART 1: INTRODUCTION TO DATA COMMUNICATIONS
AND LOCAL AREA NETWORKS

Part I introduces LAN technology and explores how LANs are used to extend the power of the standalone microcomputer.

PART II: HARDWARE
Part II outlines criteria for evaluating network layouts and choosing hardware components that can be integrated to form a system.

PART III: SOFTWARE
Part III explores the role of network software in the successful interaction of application software, workstation system software, server system software, and client/server application architecture.

PART IV: INSTALLATION AND MANAGEMENT
Part IV explores the LAN administrator's core responsibilities, including creating and managing the user environment, security, backup and recovery, and strategies for managing planned and unplanned network changes.

PART V: CONNECTING TO OTHER SYSTEMS AND NETWORKS
Part V covers wide area networks (WANs) and interconnection between LANs and WANs. This part concludes with an overview the Internet and the TCP/IP protocol suite.
