Grade 8-12 Daly provides biographical background, a ``critical study,'' a filmography, extensive notes, and a bibliography of primary and secondary sources. These secondary sources are primarily journals which are well-known and accessible to any librarian. Any student who needs information on S. E. Hinton would be better served by consulting these secondary sources. Daly's critical discussion is both facile (``If there is a formula to S. E. Hinton books it is only this: to tell the truth'') and pedantic (``In William Blake's poem The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Blake wrote of the poet of Paradise Lost . . . . In similar fashion Hinton, through the character of her narrator, Ponyboy . . . .'' It is laughable to even suggest that Hinton can be discussed in Miltonian terms). Some very fine critics (Patty Campbell, Michael Cart, Zena Sutherland) have written about Hinton, and anyone, student or teacher, would prefer these examples of true criticism to Daly's re-hash of previously published commentary.
