In 1930, at the age of twenty-five, Beth Deegan, native of Ireland, leaves her employment in London to come to America. She has agreed to tutor the two youngest children of the Bryan family for three months at Tower View, their summer estate in Connecticut. Beth believes that at the end of her commitment, she will find work in New York and acquire a college education.
During her stay at Tower View, she develops a friendship with young Rick Bryan, a fun-loving favorite son, and Robert Murther, the handsome estate manager. She wishes to avoid any romantic involvements, but Destiny takes its course.
