About the Author

Angie Debo was born in Kansas and grew up in Oklahoma. She studied history at the Universities of Oklahoma and Chicago. As well as teaching in schools and universities, she served on the board of directors of the Association of American Indian Affairs and made surveys for this Association and for the Indian Rights Association. A distinguished scholar of American Indian history, her books include The Rise and Fall of the Choctaw Republic, The Five Civilised Tribes of Oklahoma, The Road to Disappearance: A History of the Creek Indians and A History of the Indians of the United States (also published in Pimlico). She died in 1988.

Review

"In place of the distorted image of Geronimo as a bloodthirsty savage, she offers her vision of a man full of energy and drive, fiercely independent, possessed of great business acumen and interested in everything... Debo's book is the most detailed, thorough, well-written and stimulating account of Geronimo's life and circumstances" Journal of American History "This book vividly illustrates the paradoxical elements of the Apache wars and the capricious nature of Indian policy during a period of 50 years. It is also rich in character, doing full justice to the striking cast of Apache leaders: Cochise, Mangas Coloradas, Victorio and Geronimo himself" Washington Post
