They were best known for Doctor in Buckskin (1951) , based on the story of Marcus Whitman, a doctor and missionary in the Oregon territory; Troubled Border (1954) , about John McLoughlin, head of the Hudson Bay Company's outpost at Fort Vancouver; Navahos Have Five Fingers (1963) , an account of the couple's stay at a Navaho reservation and the people they met there; and Miracle Hill (1967) , the story of a young Navaho boy, Mitchell Blackhorse. Terry Diener was a professor of creative writing; a director of communications arts for the U. S.
