This collection of essays and addresses (despite the title, it is not a book with a unified thesis) resembles Muir's last collection, The Singularity of Shakespeare ( LJ 3/1/78). The pieces on Shakespeare are agreeable, straightforward, and commonsensical as they discuss didacticism, theophanies in the late plays, the texts of Lear , Shakespeare in relation to Stendhal, Calderon, etc. Some essays are on Shakespeare's contemporaries (Middleton, Ford) and critics (e.g., Bradley, and T.S. Eliot on Elizabethan drama). Its author's eminence notwithstanding, this is more for libraries with strong Muir holdings or desirous of comprehensive Elizabethan collections than for general literature collections. Robert E.
