What would appear to be just another guide to tracing ancestors, Colin Chapman's Tracing Your British Ancestors is, in fact, a readable, informative, and surprisingly original book. While it covers the conventional methods and sources employed in British genealogical research--parish records, probate records, civil and ecclesiastical records, vital records, county records, heraldry, and so forth--it touches imaginatively on areas only lightly covered or totally ignored in similar guidebooks. There are discussions of research techniques in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, for instance, and whole chapters on the old and new Poor Laws and on land records--topics usually reserved for larger, more academic studies. And, as with Mr. Chapman's other cameo publications, there is a list of useful addresses and suggestions for further reading.

INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the title page: "Best Wishes, Colin R. Chapman". 108 pages. From the author's Preface: "I began tracing my British ancestors over 40 years ago with help from family and friends, professionals and amateurs; and I have been lecturing on British genealogical research and British social and family history for twenty-five years. On many occasions my audiences world-wide asked why I hadn't, until now, written a book in the Chapman's Records Cameo series on tracing British ancestors. My response was generally that there were books already in print on the subject. "But not," my audiences insisted "with fascinating details, those extra snippets of information that you weave into your presentations". And many other books made only passing references to Scottish and Irish research and have often totally ignored the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. This book attempts to redress the balance and to include a host of useful facts, whilst taking you, the ancestor-hunter, by the hand through some of the sources available."
