This book takes a unique approach to black history. Instead of beginning in the 1500s with Estanvanico, the black man who explored the Southwest with a party of Spaniards, it takes the calendar year as its frame, beginning with January 1, the date the Emancipation Proclamation became effective in 1863. It continues day by day, presenting an astounding variety of facts and anecdotes for each day of the year. Just the thing for browsing, or sustained reading, it contains information on black achievements in education, sports, science, music, and more.
About the Author
Julia Stewart has a master's degree in African Studies from Ohio University. She has lived in Africa for many years - Kenya, Eritrea, Rwanda, Angola, and is now living in South Africa in the Hanover home of renowned Victorian-era novelist Olive Schreiner. She is the author of Quotable Africa and Quotable African Women.
